Antique Globe Wernicke Pair of Large Barrister Bookcases
Early 1900s, American, from the Globe Wernicke Co, Cincinnati OH. A rare pair of the wider stacking barrister bookcases from the commercial/file cabinet line, in the 299 style (quarter sawn oak, rich stain/finish, with brass oxidized hardware). Fourteen pieces total (seven per bookcase), starting from the bottom, including 2 double drawer bases, 2 roller shelf/open bookcase sections, 2 deep step back barrister bookcase sections, 6 standard depth barrister bookcase sections, and 2 tops.
In overall very good to excellent condition, including original finish, hardware and glass to the bookcase sections. All sides are paneled and figuring of the quartersawn oak is excellent. Deep bookcase section interiors measure 15.5d x 10h, standard depth bookcase interiors measure 11d x 10h. Includes functional rare original roller shelves for heavy ledgers/books, which are often lost to time. Please see last picture from the 1904 GW catalog for reference. Shelves can be easily removed for an open bookcase at the bottom, as pictured.
